From Both Sides
The Timothy Michael Gallery presents From Both Sides Now: Two artistic interpretations in landscape from nature to the inner city. The exhibition is a focus's on recent works by renowned artists David Eldreth and LeAnn Marie Zafuto. Eldreth's paintings are described as ““…abstract suggestions of landscapes… composed of implied horizon lines that connect and blend with two color fields. The paintings are simplified of subjective clutter and release the viewer from a world of objects.” Zafuto on the other hand interprets her landscapes primarily through the experience of inner city life. “My florals and landscapes are made up of intense colors sweeping and tumbling on top of each other. To me this is how an over crowded “exploding city garden” may look, trying to get the most flowers packed in one small area, and done with a pop art feel.”
Renowned potter and teacher David Eldreth has returned to his first love of painting. However it was David's coursework in pottery that first propelled him into a full-time pottery business, where he concentrated on the traditional practices of the Pennsylvania Germans. Since starting a small business in Lancaster, PA, David has grown his business to include over 45 craftspeople and has been honored to create a holiday ornament for the White House Christmas tree
Leann Marie Zafuto is a mainly self-taught artist whose multi-media works of acrylic, oils ink, resin and photography evoke imagery from the inner city. Her paintings assemble forms that are built up and then diminished, leaving plenty of possibility for the viewer's own experience and story line. Leann's juxtaposition of imagery from pop culture is inspired by legends such as Warhol, Rauschenberg, de Koonig as well as city life in Manhattan and a huge love of fashion and design. Her new pop-floral and mixed media collection is mainly inspired by all of the current art-spattered, spring floral collections of Prada, Diane von Fursternburg, Alexander McQueen, D&G, and Balenciaga that are almost every page of this years Vogue, Elle, W. and Bazaar magazines,(and perhaps more affordable!)
In addition to works by David Eldreth and Leann Marie Zafuto the Timothy Michael Gallery will exhibit works by sculptor Marygrace Perkins and Donna Cassaro-Hughes that relate to the theme. Marygrace left over 30 years in the corporate industry to pursue her passion for sculpting recycled metal into works of art. Marygrace was featured in the October 2007 issue of Skirt! Magazine, and was the recipient of numerous awards including, but not limited to, Recognition Award, Sculpture Celebration, Lenoir, NC (2006), Merit Award Sculpture, Hiawassee Festival (2006), and 1st Place 3D, Roswell Arts Festival (2004.) Marygrace states that her “art is a combination of left and right brain, heat and metal, a reconnection of past and present, finding passion and purpose in recycling materials. It's about appreciating good design and celebrating nature, all of which supply a multitude of diverse shapes and patterns for (her) sculpture.”
The gallery is pleased to also have a selected body of works on view by Donna Cassaro-Hughes and Timothy Michael. Donna's forte in painting women confident and almost seductive, yet graceful and elegant is an extraordinary talent. Since the age of 8 Donna has been painting, as her father, oil painter Vincent Cassaro, instructed her talent and encouraged her pursuit in the fine arts at the prestigious School of Visual Arts. Donna has spent the past 20 years painting for both residential and commercial clients. She is renowned for her contemporary portraits of women and her tranquil landscapes. Donna states that for her “painting has been a great passion. There has always been an internal desire to recreate the beauty around me.”
The opening reception From Both Sides Now: Two artistic interpretations in landscape from nature to the inner city life is being held Thursday, June 19, 2008 at the Timothy Michael Gallery. The works will be on view for 6 weeks through July 26, 2008.
